"Every time I have engaged an expert reviewer to take a detailed look at a near-final NIH submission, I have felt that they improved my score by at least 50 and sometimes over 100 points (former scoring system). To have this work, keep three things in mind---get the right reviewer for your topic, engage them well in advance so they have the time when you are ready, and get their input with enough time to use it." What Is the NAPCRG Consultants Directory?
This directory is a valuable member benefit to facilitate your ability to receive consultation and find collaborators. The NAPCRG consultants directory contains contact information for numerous individuals willing to provide consultation in more than 80 methodological topics, including quantitative and qualitative methods, technologies, and research development and design. The consultants identified in this directory have an average of more than 16 years of research experience. These individuals can provide consultancy at different levels:
Resource: A brief consultation to answer questions or provide resources
Teaching: An extended consultation in which the consultant will instruct the member in a specific topic
Review of manuscripts or grant proposals: Expert critique focused on a specific area of the consultant's expertise
Grant consulting: Assistance in grant preparation in exchange for inclusion on the proposal as a consultant
Co-investigator: Assistance in grant preparation in exchange for inclusion on the grant proposal as co-investigator
Suggested Consultation Fees
While service as grant consultant or co-investigator involves a significant investment of time, it also holds the possibility of monetary and academic compensation through grant funding and publication. Service as a teacher or reviewer, on the other hand, involves significant time investment without obvious compensation. Therefore, suggested fees for teaching and review are indicated below. Please note these are only suggestions; consultants may choose to reduce or waive fees at their discretion. It will be up to the consultant and the NAPCRG member to negotiate and execute any actual compensation.
Level of Consultation Suggested Fee
Teaching a topic to a NAPCRG member $100 per hour of instruction
Reviewing a manuscript or small grant $100 per hour of review
Reviewing a major grant (ie, R21 or R01) $500 total
